Home >> About Us > Background Background Information Uganda's Sixth Parliament created Nakapiripirit district in 2001 after splitting Moroto district. Unlike others, Nakapiripirit had been a district before, during the 1973-1981 period.
District Leadership building Nakapiripirit According to the preliminary results of the 2002 Population and Housing Census, Nakapiripirit district has a population of 156,500 persons. The district is bordered in the north by the Moroto district, Katakwi and Kumi to the West and Sironko and Kapchorwa to the south. Nakapiripirit district, which is located in northeastern Uganda, shares 300 km of borderline with the Republic of Kenya on the eastern side. The district has an area of about 6,379 sq. km.
Karimajong homes and beautiful landscape in Nakapiripirit Ngakarimojong and Pokot are the main languages spoken in the district. The district is well known in Karamoja for being the central food basket due its fertile and relatively well distributed rainfall similar to that of the neighbouring districts of Kapchorwa and Mbale. Another major economic activity in the area is livestock rearing, with an estimated population of about 215,000 cattle, 220,000 goats and sheep and about 3000 donkeys. Being a new district, the revenue capacity is not yet ascertained but available data shows that a significant amount of revenue is raised from market collections and graduated taxes (70 percent). In the last financial year figures indicate that the district raised Shs 70 million from market dues. Climate and Altitude:
The beautiful escarpment sorrounded by hanging mountains and green vegetation. The district lies between 1,000 and 1,600 metres above sea level with a number of isolated peaks rising to over 2,000-3,000 metres above sea level. The most pronounced mountain peaks in the district include Mt. Kadam, Lolekek and Napak. The district receives between 500-1500 mm of rainfall per year. |
